06/06/2018 Notice to Consumers on Takata Settlement

A notice to Virgin Islands vehicle owners from

Attorney General Claude Earl Walker on the recent

Takata settlement

On May 25, 2016, the Attorney Generalís Office filed a complaint against TK Holdings and Takata Corporation in V.I. Superior Court asserting causes of action related to Takata airbags and seeking civil penalties. The Virgin Islands asserted claims that Takata engaged in unlawful practices in connection with the manufacturing, marketing and selling of its dangerous airbags installed in vehicles sold to Virgin Islands consumers.

Takata, which filed for bankruptcy last year, has agreed to pay the Virgin Islands approximately $1.5 million and a significant portion of these settlement proceeds will be used to give $200 each to 2,500 Virgin Islands consumers who own older vehicles equipped with Takata airbags.

Consumers must follow the four (4) steps detailed in the linked PDF in order to determine their eligibility.
